Why should we study human remains?

Archaeologists often discover human remains on archaeological sites, either as solitary burials or as part of formal cemeteries. Before any development can take place, these burials must be carefully and respectfully excavated

By studying these remains, we can determine the age, biological sex, and the presence of any diseases or injuries of the individual. In addition, we can also gather information about their diet, such as whether they were malnourished. This analysis can provide us with valuable insights into their lives and the communities they belong to. For instance, we can understand how their community cared for them by looking for evidence of medical care after injuries.

Furthermore, studying human remains can offer us priceless information about the daily lives of ordinary people during historical times. This knowledge is often missing from written records, making these remains a significant source of understanding.

Ethics

The osteological team at Abbey Archaeology is committed to ethically treating and analysing human osteological remains. They adhere to the codes of conduct set out by BABAO (British Association of Biological Anthropologists and Osteoarchaeologists), CIFA (Chartered Institute for Archaeologists) and Historic England (Formerly English Heritage).

We offer a variety of services to our clients.

On-Site:

Our osteological staff can provide guidance on the most effective excavation and sampling techniques to ensure the complete collection of all bones. Additionally, we can provide trained staff to excavate and accurately document the remains efficiently

Analysis and reporting:

We assess the age and sex of the individuals, taking note of any pathologies, trauma, non-metric traits, and developmental defects that are encountered. Based on this information, we generate a report. In the case of a larger assemblage, a more formal publication may be needed.

Training/Outreach:

Our osteologists can help train your excavation staff to recognise human bones and assist with osteological outreach at events.
